What to do when your child eats four foods

Pasta, banana, crackers, yoghurt. If that is your whole menu, you are not doing it wrong. Ordinary fussiness, and pressure makes it worse. The American Academy of Pediatrics explains why: after the rapid growth of infancy, toddler growth and appetite slow down, and for weeks a child may eat only 1 or 2 preferred foods. AAP: 10 tips for parents of picky eaters The full mealtime system behind this guide is 10 Ingredients, 30 Meals.

Toddler pushing away a bowl while a parent offers a tasting plate

Stop chasing one good dinner

Keep two safe foods they accept, rotate only the third. The book runs a four-week rotation, thirty meals from ten ingredients.

Food chaining, in practice

Chain by one small change: white pasta, pasta with butter, butter with cheese on the side, cheese toast cut the same shape. Same colour first, new taste later.

How many tries? Ten or more

One refusal means nothing. The AAP reports it can take 10 or more tastings before acceptance, so keep offering without pressure. Serve new foods in small amounts to limit waste, wait a week or two before reintroducing the same food, and keep meals scheduled with limited snacks so your child arrives hungry. Exposure without pressure

New food on the table, not their plate. You decide what is served, they decide what goes in. No bribes, no one-more-bite, no replacement meal.

NHS guidance agrees: give your child the same food as the rest of the family, eat together so they copy you, serve small portions and praise even small eating. If food is rejected, do not force it. Take it away without comment, stay calm, and try another time. Never use food as a reward. NHS: Fussy eaters

A script for no

Keep it short and identical every time: that is fine, this is dinner tonight, your yoghurt is here too. Then stop talking about food. The AAP warns against bribes: promising treats makes the prize food more exciting and the target food a chore, which leads to nightly table battles. The split stands: you provide the food, your child decides whether to eat it. AAP: why bribes backfire
